Wood Box, a 250 sqm retreat in Jakarta’s tropical hum, tests two hypotheses: Can a compact urban house foster family connection through bioclimatic design with modular timber? How can a timber-glass facade create a sustainable, airy home? Designed for a young family, it embraces simplicity on a rectangular plot, weaving light and air into a warm, functional sanctuary.
The facade, a modular grid of timber slats and glass, softens Jakarta’s heat while channeling breezes through north-south openings, crafted by local artisans for durability and elegance. Skylights and high ceilings amplify daylight, reducing cooling needs. The open-plan living and dining areas flow into a central courtyard—a shaded, open-air space for family gatherings—connecting the indoors to a small garden. The landscape, with native plants and a minimalist lawn, cools the microclimate, grounding the house in its urban context.
Using prefabricated timber modules and local materials, Wood Box balances efficiency and warmth across its two stories, with flexible family spaces and a rooftop terrace. Its airy, light-filled design, rooted in tropical adaptation, humbly proves a modest home can nurture connection and comfort through craft and environmental harmony.
