University of Indonesia’s Vocational Program Complex stems from two hypotheses: “Can a pedestrian-friendly campus create a safe, free environment connected to nature and each other?” and “How can a superblock design align with UI’s identity while maximizing land potential?” Born from our 1st Prize-winning entry in the UI Vocational Program Design Competition, this complex for 11,000 students answers with a microclimate-driven superblock, blending safety, connectivity, and context.
Organized around three nodes—the river-divided existing area, the southern bus-stop road, and the western service spine—the design activates a “learning promenade.” This linear axis hosts a library with medicinal herb views, cafes for connection, and a lush, tree-shaded landscape that follows natural contours to reduce heat. Three vistas emerge: a study scene framed by herbs, a northern water amphitheater, and an eastern ground-floor gathering space. Special programs include four theater classrooms (300-400 capacity) and varied lecture halls (20-120 students), seamlessly integrated.
Traditional clay brick ties the aesthetic to UI’s heritage, while north-south building orientations and greenery enhance bioclimatic comfort. Begun in 2010, this project shapes our approach to safety, nature, and creativity across scales—proving a connected, contextual campus can thrive within a superblock.
