Tunas Muda Kindergarten begins with a hypothesis: “How can architecture maximize 80 percent of an existing structure to minimize cost and accelerate construction in a single-storey building?” The design answers by repurposing existing columns under a lightweight roof system, creating a cost-effective canopy that spans the landscape. A 19.0-meter Cremona structure stretches across the columns, detaching the roof from ground walls to form a unified shelter. Flexible classrooms emerge beneath, accessible from multiple entries to enhance adaptability.
The lobby and corridors embrace full open-air design, with airflow optimized by openings on three sides. A simple double-loaded corridor runs centrally, illuminated by skylights that frame views to two open playgrounds linked by a single circulation path. The facade retains old BRC bricks with round openings, paired with a lightweight main door tailored for children to operate easily. A modest 6 x 12.0-meter extension—the only new build—houses a children’s hall and computer science space, keeping additions minimal.
By leveraging existing structure, lightweight systems, and open layouts, Tunas Muda Kindergarten delivers an efficient, fast-built composition—proving 80 percent reuse can yield a vibrant, child-friendly space while cutting costs and time.
