079 – Sapo House

Sapo House, named by its owner to signify a “shelter” for retreat, is driven by a hypothesis: “Can a single-story home serve as a collaborative sanctuary for work, rest, and reflection while harmonizing cultural identities and natural surroundings?” Envisioned as the client’s first home, Sapo House is a 70% retreat space, designed as a haven for daily respite, work, and simple relaxation. This residence blends functionality with cultural resonance, drawing inspiration from the rich architectural traditions of Sumatra, Batak Karo, Java, and Tumpeng Sari, creating a unique identity rooted in Nusantara heritage.

The architectural design prioritizes simplicity and connection to nature. A single-story structure with a dynamic, undulating roofline evokes the rhythmic beauty of Karo’s natural landscapes, crafted using a composite steel and concrete structure with durable bitumen finishes for cost-effective, long-lasting construction. A central skylight, adorned with stained glass, transforms the core of the home into a temple-like space for rest and contemplation, bathing the interior in soft, colorful light. Surrounding terraces are strategically positioned to capture afternoon and evening sunlight, enhancing the home’s warmth and openness. Existing mature trees on the site are preserved, serving as natural sunshades to regulate light and heat, while intricate latticework (kisi-kisi) softens the interior ambiance, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.

The house integrates versatile spaces, including a gym for physical activity, a workspace for productivity, and areas for quiet retreat, embodying its role as a modern “singgah” (waystation). Building simulations ensure optimal light and thermal performance, aligning with the client’s vision of a practical yet poetic retreat. By weaving together cultural motifs, natural integration, and a minimalist yet expressive design, Sapo House become a tranquil, multi-functional sanctuary that celebrates both personal retreat and the enduring beauty of Nusantara’s architectural heritage.
