06 – Piyandeling (Kujang)

Kujang, a two-story pavilion within the Piyandeling complex in Mekarwangi Village, North Bandung, tests two hypotheses: Can a rural workshop space foster community and creativity through local bamboo craftsmanship while minimizing environmental impact? How can a bioclimatic design adapt to Bandung’s climate using traditional materials to create a functional, expressive pavilion? Designed as an open-air hall for workshops and gatherings, Kujang draws from Guha Bambu and Alfa Omega School, blending local genius with sustainable innovation.

The facade, a 4-5m grid of sympodial bamboo with a nipah-leaf roof, opens north-south for cross-ventilation, echoing West Java’s Julang Ngapak vernacular with a mountain-like silhouette. Its hyperboloid bamboo balustrades, shaped like bird movements or the Sunda kujang weapon, add strength and poetic form. The open hall, serving as a courtyard-like space, connects to surrounding organic farms, hosting community events. The landscape, with stone foundations and minimal earth contact via a floating structure, ensures water flows to the land, addressing local water scarcity.

Crafted by local craftsmen using bamboo and nipah, Kujang’s raw, hand-carved details—from balustrades to roof—create a lightweight, low-impact space. This pavilion proves a modest structure can nurture creativity and community while harmonizing with Bandung’s hills.
