32 – Nizamia Andalusia School

Nizamia Andalusia begins with two hypotheses: “Can an existing structure be repurposed with cross-programming to elevate a school’s identity and support mature learners?” and “How can design adapt to severe time constraints while enhancing functionality and socialization?” Located in East Jakarta, this Middle and Senior High School—designed for students maturing beyond elementary years—embodies the vision, the design inspired by kampoong cross-programming. It blends recycled materials and diverse functions within a single “big box” to foster independence and social-spiritual growth.

Pressed by a tight timeline, we repurposed existing buildings, adapting their modules for classrooms and adding minimal new structures. Two main blocks connect via bridges at the 2nd and 5th floors, reengineered for fluid horizontal circulation. The 1st and 2nd floors weave gardens, classrooms, and communal spaces; the 3rd hosts a 700-person prayer room; the 4th an auditorium; and the 5th an open sports hall. This layered design turns constraints into a dynamic architectural language.

Nizamia Andalusia proves that adaptive reuse and rapid innovation can craft a school that nurtures maturity and community—elevating its identity while thriving under pressure.
