The National Gallery of Indonesia, a competition-winning proposal for Jakarta’s cultural heart, tests two hypotheses: Can a gallery connect heritage buildings with public and private spaces through bioclimatic design? How can a modular facade and elevated structure create a sustainable, light-filled space? Titled “Nature + Sky,” the design links two Dutch-Indies heritage buildings from 1817, weaving past and present into a vibrant arts hub.

The facade, a modular grid of perforated metal and glass, softens Jakarta’s heat while channeling daylight into galleries, crafted with local precision to echo the heritage buildings’ colonial elegance. Elevated on slender columns, the structure creates an open plaza beneath—a courtyard-like space for public gatherings, exhibitions, and community events, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor realms. Skylights and high ceilings enhance ventilation, reducing cooling needs. The landscape, with native trees and low-lying plants, frames the plaza, preserving the site’s urban greenery and cooling the microclimate.

Spanning public galleries and private preservation areas, the design ensures accessibility and art protection using sustainable materials like recycled steel and local stone. Awarded first place in the 2024 competition, this proposal humbly proves a gallery can bridge history, community, and environment through thoughtful craft and climatic harmony.
