Essence Assignment 2 : Learning Thinking Drawing Working Drawing from the Master

Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the ray material he will fashion into afigure. But it’s the same with that type of artistic activity as with all other: We are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mol the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Handout: 11 April 2013,

Value: 40 % of total hard work

Welcome back Team, finally we are in the final assignment session! In one group students have to make a report, a creative story board and a video as a conclusion from all of your study and your survey about  one architect’s work; it’s all about thinking drawing and working drawing. Choose one architect who has more than 5 years experience with one of his or her work, do interview them, and do understand their thinking as the part of the empiricist learning. Please do remember that the design has to be built finished. On the report, you may put your existing survey from the past presentation if it is necessary, by doing that you also have to make a comparison from one theory from text book given before  to another. I will monitor all of your progress of knowledge in the team, each of you must contribute workequally. The aspects of comparison of projects are listed below:

1.Architectural spaces, finishes’ resultant from the thinking solution from the architect

2.Design constraint and capability in working drawing from stage 1 to stage 5, to think about beauty of the texture of the material, its functionality to address water, sunlight, and activity of the people. Explain it through architect’s sketch if it necessary.

3.Construction and Material Implication: on cost, system construction, local existence such as climate, labor, and technology (kecocokan system struktur terhadap kondisi lokal, contohnya: cuaca, kondisi buruh setempat, dan teknologi)

In setting out your case study, the structure of your text and graphic analysis must follow a logical, chronological sequence, i.e. and interaction of the process and the consequent product.

There must be sufficient photos, plans, sections, diagrams to support your analysis and provide clear documentation of the project. The assignment requires imaginative engagement with the case study, its generally explains the process of making which is complex. Have you realized it now?

The process: Investigation should include, following aspect:

–       historical background to the case study could be [Political, economic, and social]

–       The underlying philosophy of the proposal, ‘why is this here?’

–       The stakeholders or individuals or clients who influenced the project and who is the driver of the process. I know it must be client but mention the builder, the Mechanical consultant, structure consultant, who else? [show more than 2 individuals]

–       the local council policy

–       the strategy of the design work

–       economic components, funding, and feasibility linked to the structure problem solving

–       The story of the development

–       Define what is the type structure in the building? Why? Explain and analyze.

–       What is the construction material used? Why?

–       Diagrams showing the thinking drawing

–       Sketches showing the thinking drawing

–       Working drawing including, ceiling finishes, roof finishes, wall finishes, door and window finishes. And the most important is WHY ?

Your investigation should not be regarded as an exhaustive list. Each of the above headings has many sub headings that could be extended to suit each case study, and class presentations of this course. Students must identify the unique aspects of process and product that arise out their particular case study.
