Architecture Mastery it’s Natural State

23 – Sumarah

Sumarah, an architectural installation, tests two hypotheses: Can a minimalist structure evoke the Javanese spiritual practice of Sumarah—surrendering to the universe—while inviting personal reflections on strength? How can nanotechnology and organic forms create a complex, life-affirming space? Titled 99% Sumarah, this work weaves philosophy and craft into a vibrant meditation on life’s natural flow.

Composed of 300 stacked boxes (300 x 300 x 600 mm), Sumarah forms a hill-like structure, built in under a day using primitive stacking techniques. Parabolic and catenary curves, crafted from nanotechnology materials, ensure stability with minimal joints and no foundation, echoing nature’s efficiency. Two catenary-curved entryways lead visitors into a living interior where fresh air nurtures suspended plants and clear waters house fish—symbols of life’s diversity. From outside, the installation’s intricate form suggests complexity; within, it reveals a subtle, organic harmony, inviting surrender to the present.

The landscape, with native plants and open air, cools the microclimate, blending the structure with its surroundings. The title 99% Sumarah reflects its collaborative ethos: 99% is the makers’ craft, while 1% is the visitors’ interpretations—critiques, laughter, and redefined meanings—completing the work. Using sustainable nanotechnology and modular design, the installation balances innovation and tradition, fostering reflection in a fleeting urban context.

Displayed as a conceptual prototype, Sumarah humbly proves that architecture can bridge spirituality, nature, and human experience, creating a space where surrender and strength coexist in delicate harmony.
