Sawo Morahai House springs from a compelling hypothesis: “Can a compact residence in a vibrant community hub balance cultural roots, social engagement, and modern functionality for a family deeply tied to Maluku’s heritage?” Designed for a client whose home must welcome many visitors, this residence on a dense urban lot integrates social, professional, and private spaces while reflecting the couple’s passions—the husband’s Maluku identity and his wife dedication to community governance.
The ground floor is a dynamic social core, accommodating four cars in an open garage that doubles as a flexible space, directly connecting to a nearby RPTRA (community park). A lush garden fronts the house, leading to a foyer and terrace that flow into a communal gathering area at the lot’s edges, fostering interaction with neighbors. The design respects the surroundings, keeping southern and northern sides open to avoid overshadowing adjacent properties. Two bedrooms and a workspace on the ground floor cater to daily needs, while a spacious social space ties the home to its community context.
The second floor houses a library and two guest bedrooms, with a central office space that serves as the heart of the home. Above, the third floor contains the main bedroom and two children’s rooms, creating a private family core. A rooftop garden crowns the design, featuring a pingpong area, pantry, and seating zone—an inviting retreat for relaxation and play.
The facade expresses Maluku’s heritage, with exposed wooden elements mimicking boat masts and totems, paired with natural ulin wood for a raw, organic texture. Gray-toned finishes complement the wooden surfaces, while strategic openings along the staircase allow bright, indirect light to flood the interiors. The western facade is closed to shield against harsh sun, with voids and terraces channeling soft, diffused light. Curved detailing and careful solar orientation enhance the interplay of solid and void spaces, with bedrooms as the solid core and social areas as open, fluid zones.
